As I’ve been celebrating my 1,000th day of taking a photo a day, I recently went over my top ten in terms of photography. Of course, I can’t really say that my best photographs are necessarily my favourite pictures. In fact, probably not, because there are many other pictures that are super special to me because of the memories they capture and the stories they represent. This batch of ten photos is dedicated to ten special memories dating back to New Year’s 2010. It was hard enough doing this as well, though, because there are some days where beauty and story intersect like no other.
#308 Shawn & Gus // 04 November 2010 // Santa Barbara, CA
It isn’t so much just the fact that I got to meet the leads of my favourite TV show, but this represents a little season of my life when so much was happening. Couch surfing around in Santa Barbara really brought out all kinds of cool stories and different experiences in my life, and it was only hammered home how my life had taken off from the point where it had been prior to that year by such crazy experiences like this one.
#296 Sufjan Stevens // 23 October 2010 // Los Angeles, CA
Again, this represents the season as much as it does the actual photographed moment. To date, this is still the best live show I’ve seen- and I’ve seen some good ones since then. Fall Quarter of my Junior year was amazing, and I still remember Sufjan’s seemingly endless performance of Impossible Soul at the Wiltern in L.A. as one of the greatest musical experiences of my life. I’m thankful I had my friends Daniel and Meaghan to share that experience.
#70 Aconcagua // 11 March 2011 // Mendoza, Argentina
More and more lately, I’m realizing that it’s hard to believe how much beauty I’m able to experience in my life. I’ve seen some amazing things, in amazing places all around the world. It doesn’t have to be that way, but I’ve found that the more I chase after God and amazing stories, the more beauty follows. Maybe it’s the scene, maybe it’s my vision, but I get absolutely amazed on a regular basis.
#11 Dashboard Jesus // 11 January 2011 // Goleta, CA
So, this photo is actually a stand-in. The real memory I want in this picture is captured by a photograph that would give too much away. But basically, one way that I started growing from the start of this project was from past relationships that did a lot of damage. After a long sustained silence, I got back in contact from someone in my past. She was doing well and so was I, and both of us in different ways that wouldn’t have happened if not for the messy past. All things can be redeemed.
#190 Canals of Venice // 09 July 2010 // Venice, Italy
The past few years of my life can be decidedly marked by all kinds of cool travel adventures- and I still think my trip to Venice was one of the more memorable ones. There isn’t a direction you can face in Venice that isn’t picturesque, and my weekend there kind of captured the essence of my time in Italy. A bit of conversation, a bit of exploring, a bit of good food, all kinds of good things in portions. It’s still a fond memory.
#145 Legos & Breakfast // 25 May 2011 // Goleta, CA
One of my favourite memories with Daniel, ever. Good stories happen in weird places, or at weird times. One night, while I was sleeping on his air mattress, we stayed up super late watching Psych. Somehow the conversation shifted towards the Lego set of the Seattle Space Needle that I bought and had yet to build. Soon enough, at 5 AM, we were on our way to Denny’s for no other reason than to play with Legos and build a tower. It was fun building in the midst of students pulling all nighters.
#233 First Day at LiNK // 20 August 2012 // Torrance, CA
This adventure of my life is ongoing! I’m making this post from the road while on LiNK’s Shift tour. Working with a social justice group to bring justice to a majorly oppressed people group is both a dream and a calling for me. Being able to incorporate some of my other interests- travel, public communication, into the equation means that the LiNK experience feels like a dream come true. I get confirmation of that all over the place.
#9 The Essential Love Dungeon // 09 January 2012 // Isla Vista, CA
I’ve been forever shaped by Chase, Derek, Chris, Matt, Bryce, Ariel, and Mike. Oh, and Bo too. The Love Dungeon was an unforgettable house to live in and these guys made it that way. Living with seven of your best friends is an experience, that’s for sure, but I think we’ve all learned some amazing things from each other, and over the course of a year we got to see each other grow and mature in so many different ways. The Love Dungeon will always exist, even if it won’t always have an address.
#66 Paragliding Over Bariloche // 07 March 2011 // Bariloche, Argentina
The weekend I spent in Bariloche, Argentina is still likely the most adventure filled weekend of my life. We stayed in the coziest cabin-hostel ever, and I got to participate in awesome stories like a 20km bike circuit, cave exploring, and kayaking. This photo comes from mid-air while paragliding. The hostel owner woke me up one morning by tapping my leg and seeing if I wanted to go. I was so down.
#160 Deanna and Philippe // 08 June 2012 // Santa Barbara, CA
And we’ve been dating since then! It’s awesome dating your best friend, even if it was something that took over a year and a half to come about. Deanna’s been a big blessing in my life, and our relationship came at just the right time for the both of us, even if it doesn’t always look that way on paper. She makes me want to be the kind of person she sees in me, and it’s that good sort of challenge that makes me confident about our relationship.
